The 60th year of the Indian republic made Bollywood proud when two leading stars of Bollywood were awarded top civilian honours. Today, the Government of India awarded Padma Shree to Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has popularized Indian cinema across the globe and has given much to Indian entertainment industry and though Akshay Kumar has done mainly commercial cinema yet his success and hits cannot be ignored. To be known that a few days ago, Akshay had been given the popular choice best actor award, which he refused. The other Bollywood recipient of the prestigious Padma Shree is none other than the legendary Helen.

Hrithik Roshan injured shooting for 'Kites'

Shooting for home production "Kites" has been jinxed for Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan. After hurting his knees while doing a dangerous car stunt in Las Vegas in October last, the actor hurt his arm at the Filmistan Studio in Mumbai Tuesday. "Hrithik hurt his arm while doing a stunt shot for ’Kites’ at the Filmistan studio.

He was breaking a glass with a rod and one piece of glass flew and hurt him. It’s a minor injury - there’s nothing major," a source close to Hrithik told IANS. Hrithik suffered many injuries after he performed some daring stunts in "Krrish" and "Dhoom 2". He had torn the ligament in his right knee and continued working despite the pain.

Towards the latter half of 2008, Hrithik underwent surgery in the US and spent nearly two months recovering but his tryst with injuries continues. "Kites", directed by Anurag Basu, is being touted as featuring Hrithik’s most sensuous role till date.

He stars opposite US-based Spanish model Barbara Mori. The film is about an Indian boy’s romantic affair with a Latina girl and their predicament as they do not understand each other’s language. It also stars actress Kangana Ranaut.

Ranbir's mom unsure about Deepika

For quite sometime, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone are not going steady in their relationship and with so many ups and downs in their life, their parents are also uncertain about their future. Ranbir’s mother Neetu Singh who already dreamt Deepika as her daughter-in-law is now seems unconfident about Deepika. She raised the eyebrows of all when she was quoted as saying, "Deepika is just another girlfriend in Ranbir’s life."

When asked to clarify the reason of her doubts, she explained, "Both of them are very young. It’s a long way to go before marriage. No one knows what future holds for them." ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ nominated in ten Oscar Categories!

The good news for Slumdog Millionaire have kept on arriving as the movie after winning Golden Globe is nominated in Ten Categories for the Oscar awards including nomination for the best picture and best director for Danny Boyle. The movie is also nominated in best adapted screen play, cinematography, editing, original score, sound editing and sound mixing. Amazingly the movie scored two out of three nominations for best song “Jai ho” (A.R Rahman) and “O Saya” (A.R Rahman and M.I.A).

The other big movie with a good number of nominations is the “”The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” which bagged whopping 13 nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor for Brad Pitt. Rahman, the film’s composer, also expressed his joy for the nomination in the words. “Slumdog Millionaire has paid magical dividends for so many people around the globe. I am deeply honoured to be a part of a film that has inspired so many,” Other than Danny Boyle who are nominated for best director are Stephen Daldry for “The Reader,” David Fincher for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” Ron Howard for “Frost/Nixon” and Gus Van Sant for “Milk.

Govinda to launch his daughter Narmada

Govinda’s career graph is on a downhill now and since her daughter Narmada is now ready to face the camera and the anxious father has decided to produce her debut film himself.

‘Narmada will launch her film career anytime in 2009. I feel today she is emotionally ready to face the camera,’ said Govinda adding, “After weighing all the pros and cons, I decided I’m the best person to produce my daughter’s debut film. I don’t want anyone else, no matter how well-meaning, to take the credit for launching my daughter.” Govinda is considering Nikhil Advani and Shaad Ali for directing the film. “Ideally, I’d have liked Narmada to be launched by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He is among our best. But since that is not possible, we’re looking at some other names. My daughter has to be directed by someone who has a vision and an aesthetic sense and also respects the work that I do,” said the actor. As for himself, Govinda wants to slow down his pace and has stopped signing new films or taking up rputine roles. He has decided to work only with directors who are as organised and disciplined as Mani Ratnam.

John & Katrina were bounced back from the nightclub

Currently, Katrina Kaif and John Abraham are in US shooting for director Kabir Khan’s film ‘New York’. It so happened that during the shoot, one of the crew members threw a party at a nightclub and invited Katrina, John and the director to the party. However, when John and Katrina, along with Kabir Khan, got to the club, they were denied entry because they were reportedly not carrying proper identification proofs.

They even told the bouncers that they were known stars from India, but the argument apparently cut no ice with the American bouncers. So, while everyone else were partying hard inside, John and Katrina found themselves bounced out of the nightclub. They even drove back to their hotel and returned with ID proofs. But it was too late by then and the party had already died down.

Sherlyn Chopra severely injured

Sexy Sherlyn Chopra met with a severe accident while shooting for Yash Raj Films’ in Chandigarh. She banged her head against a sharp wall that caused a huge red bump on her forehead. The actress cum singer cried in pain and she immediately given medication. A unit member revealed as to what happened, "Sherlyn is very vivacious and bubbly by nature. She does not like to sit at one place and ends up playing games after pack-up. Sherlyn is an expert at badminton and swimming. At times to unwind, she also likes to indulge in games like hide and seek that are usually played by children. Shrelyn was playing with her staff in the hotel lobby and that’s when the accident happened. She was too shocked to react initially. Sherlyn was also very conscious of the bump that had occurred on her forehead." After the accident, Sherlyn requested director Anurag Singh for three days leave but Anurag who was not in the favor of delaying the shoot suggested Sherlyn to go for a modern technology of make-up that would hide her injury. After being convinced, Sherlyn agreed to shoot.

Deepika Padukone to try her hand at comedy

Deepika Padukone’s ‘Chandni Chowk To China’ is about to hit the screens and the lady is all too excited about it. Now, Deepika is all set to do a full-fledged comedy film with Sajid Khan. The film is titled ‘Houseful’ and with this film, Deepika will get her first taste with comedy. About ‘Houseful’, Deepika says, “My role in the film is not about just a few comic scenes here and there. It’s a total comic role. I wonder how I’ll manage it. Magar main koshish karoongi. Sajid has a great sense of humour and I will go by his vision. Besides, if my director has so much confidence in me, then I just cannot let him down.” Deepika padukone has no qualms about the fact if the audience will take to seeing a funny Deepika. She answers defiantly, “I do have a sense of fun and I plan to have a ball of a time doing HOUSEFUL. See, I am a reserved person in real life, but that does not mean that I can’t be funny for the camera.” Now we wonder if that actually works.

Jiah Khan in new PETA ad

Actress Jiah Khan is supporting what some might consider a slightly unusual cause - she wants a ban on glass-coated manja (string) used for kite flying to avoid hurting birds. Jiah will be seen in a People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) ad, dressed as a wounded bird wrapped in kite string. The tagline of the ad is "Cut the glass-coated manja (string), not birds’ wings". Ace photographer Farrokh Chothia shot the ad and its release coincides with the festival of Makar Sankranti, when kites are traditionally flown. British born Jiah debuted in Bollywood with Ram Gopal Varma’s controversial movie Nishabd opposite megastar Amitabh Bachchan. Recently, she shared screen space with Aamir Khan in the hit film Ghajini. Other celebrities who have been part of PETA campaigns are John Abraham, Gulshan Grover, Rahul Khanna, Yana Gupta, Rakhi Sawant and many more.

When people see me in `Yeh Hausla`, I hope they see me and not just Smita Patil. While doing `Yeh Hausla`, I felt I was connecting with Smita`s spirit. Maybe it was the pure, unspoilt ambience and that whole spirit of `Chakra` and `Manthan` that Smita is associated with.” “Nagesh has taught me so much. I`ve connected with emotions within myself that I never knew existed. I felt I`ve gone to acting school. Other actors came and went. But I was there for the full 47-day schedule. Aamir's tattoo makes life miserable for Bangalore woman

Sorry wrong number! Bangalorean Sarah Varghese is sick of saying that, after her number was tattooed on Aamir Khan’s body in the film Ghajini. Aamir tattoos his body with all the clues that he can get to seek revenge from the person who killed his love, Kalpana. But it’s these tattoos that have brought misery to Sarah.

It was Sarah’s number that was tattooed on Aamir’s body which splashed on all posters across the city. Needless to say Sarah is as irritated with Ghajini as Aamir is in the movie "I thought somebody was playing a prank but when I saw the poster I was really shocked. I was wondering how could my number feature in that and I was really shocked," said Sarah.

So as Ghajni hit the screens on the December 25 and as Aamir bashed up all the baddies he could get in the movie, life for Sarah became even more difficult. Her phone kept ringing continuously sometimes to even 50 times a day. Sarah - who usually doesn’t watch movies on the big screen - decided that enough is enough and went and watched the movie on New Year’s eve.

When asked if she is planning to lodge a complaint against the producers of the movie, Sarah said,"We’ll see as things come and how far it goes. The calls are now reducing, so if it stops completely now, I will not file a complaint". Sarah might not file a complaint but one thing is sure, Aamir’s memory loss has definitely made her lose sleep. However, Sarah who despite all this is one big Aamir fan and she now just hopes that in his next movie she would have no connection with it. Raima Sen & Arbaaz Khan paired for PVR films

Releasing this February 6, ‘Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye’ has an unusual pairing of Raima Sen and Arbaaz Khan. The movie based on extra marital drama has a female director Madhurita. Talking about her first female director, Arbaaz says, ‘Actually, I already have a female director at home,’ jokes Arbaaz.

‘Malaika thinks she directs my entire life. But seriously, I was very impressed by Madhurita Anand’s mature script about love marriage and adultery. It’s got me and Raima Sen.’ Also starring in a pivotal role is Randeep Hooda, who plays as many as 18 different characters in the film. Arbaaz also plays the lead with brother Sohail in the home production ‘Kissan’, which Puneet Sira is directing. ‘It’s a rural story and the problems caused by migration. Sohail and I play brothers, and that’s the best part of it… Malaika and I are together though only for an item song in ‘Shaadi Ke Side Effects’. I’m looking forward to doing a full-fledged film with her,’ says Arbaaz.

Salman parties with Asin in Katrina's absence

Katrina Kaif was conspicuously missing from the birthday celebration of Salman Khan , who had other pretty company for the day at his farmhouse. The entire Khandaan was camped at the family’s Panvel farmhouse last weekend to mark the 43rd birthday of the flamboyant Khan. Though there wasn’t any big party - none’s in the mood to celebrate after 26/11 - there was a small get-together of friends and relatives. Among the friends that dropped by were three pretty things - Asin , Zarine Khan and Mallika Sherawat (from where on earth did she pop in the Khan affair). While Katrina was away on a family reunion in London, Salman played a good host to her lookalike Zarine, who, by the way, has already hit a jackpot by landing a role opposite Salman Bhai (oops!) in producer Vijay Galani’s Veer . Needless to say the director of ‘Veer’, Anil Sharma , and Galani were also invited.Salman’s special guest Asin - who is also his heroine in London Dreams - caught many eyes at the party and received many compliments for her successful Bollywood debut in Ghajini . Unlike every year when the party in the Khan household begins from Salman’s birthday (Dec 27) and continues well into the New Year, this time the mood is somewhat subdued. So after the food and drinks were over, people headed back to their homes. What else to do?

Ranbir is Maniratnam's new hero

Mani Ratnam is busy directing Abhishek Bachchan, Vikram and Aishwarya Rai for ’Ravana’. Buzz is that the movie would be completed soon for Mani Ratnam is contemplating to do a movie starring Ranbir Kapoor.

Ranbir Kapoor, son of veteran actor Rishi Kapoor, shot to fame with ’Saawariya’. Sources say the movie that brings Ranbir Kapoor and Mani Ratnam would be a jubilant subject to be canned entirely in London. Meanwhile, Mani Ratnam is planning to shoot prominent portions for his ’Ravana’ in remote villages in Madhya Pradesh this January. Portions featuring Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya and Vikram would be shot in these locales. In the upcoming month of February, the crew will move to Kumbakonam in Tamilnadu for further schedules.

The cover-girl Tabu - New Year gift from ‘Vogue’

2008 set a new trend of Bollywood beauties raining cats and dogs on the covers of various fashion and lifestyle magazines and the trend is definitely going to gain more pace in the coming year. To start with, the first cover-girl of 2009 is none other than the talented and beautiful Tabu who will be seen gracing the cover of fashion magazine Vogue in their January 2009 issue. The actress looks drop dead gorgeous draped in an off-white silk dress embroidered with Swarovski stones. The issue has Tabu open up to director Homi Adajania (of Being Cyrus fame) revealing all about herself right from her growing up days in a haveli in Hyderabad to her making the big screen debut opposite Rishi Kapoor (an actor much shorter than her in height) to what she believes are her best performances till date. Sure this is the best new year gift ‘Vogue’ could offer its viewers!

Aamir changed the climax - Murugadoss

Director Murugadoss, in an interview, has said that Aamir Khan rewrote the entire climax of the film. According to the director, Aamir wanted to stick to the original script but changed the climax to suit the Bollywood audience. He said that the Hindi version of Ghajini is far better than the Tamil version because the changes that have been made by Aamir Khan.

The film, which was released a few days ago, has already grossed over Rs. 90 crores worldwide. Murugadoss added that Aamir turned out to be his consultant. He disclosed that he would consult him for all his future ventures.

Party time for ‘Ghajini’ team

The long and hard work from the team of perfectionist Khan has finally paid off and ‘Ghajini’ has broken all records by becoming the only Indian film to earn one billion rupees at the box office across the country in less than a week of its release on Christmas. Apart from this, the film has fared very well in the overseas market as well with a gross of US four million dollars in the same week. Not to mention, it called for a grand party and celebration.

So, it was party time for cast and crew of ‘Ghajini’ as they celebrated the huge success of their film in Mumbai. A cake was cut by Aamir with figures of the collection topping it.

Aamir Khan was more than happy at this success and said, “I’’m very happy and thankful that the film is being appreciated by the audience so much. The hard work put in by the entire team is being appreciated by the people.”

Asin, who has done many films in South and makes her debut in Bollywood with this film expressed her delight at the film’s success and thanked the audience for appreciating her performance. “I don’t come with baggage or expectations. I just focus on my work. I thank you all for the love you have given,” said Asin.
